PRESSEMITTEILUNG

Berlin/Beirut, 18. August 2025

PRESSE RELEASE

Berlin/Beirut, 18 August 2025
New award launched to promote outstanding
research in Arabic and Middle Eastern studies:
the Riwaq Book Prize

The Divan – The Arabic Cultural House affiliated with the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Berlin, and the Orient Institute Beirut (OIB) of the Max Weber Foundation – German Humanities Institutes Abroad – have signed an agreement to jointly award a new academic prize: the "Riwaq Prize for Research and Culture".

With this prize, both institutions aim to strengthen academic and cultural exchange between the Arab world and Germany. The prize honours outstanding monographs in all fields of Arabic studies and Middle Eastern studies recently published in Arabic, German or English.

Promoting excellent research

"This prize is a commitment to academic freedom and the importance of intercultural dialogue," explains Prof. Dr. Jens Hanssen, Director of the OIB. Abdulla Yousef Alsaai, First Secretary of the Embassy of the State of Qatar, responsible for cultural affairs, also emphasizes: "With the Riwaq Prize for Research and Culture, we are creating a platform to promote new scientific impulses and at the same time increase the visibility of excellent research on the Arab world."

The prize is awarded every two years and alternates between the humanities and social sciences. It honours original monographs that contribute to the development of their disciplines. Anthologies, translations, new editions and textbooks are not eligible for the award.

Selection

The prize is organised by a five-member board, supported by three expert juries, which evaluate the submitted works in the language categories Arabic, German and English.

The prize money totals 3,000 euros and is divided equally among the three winners. The award ceremony takes place during the Divan Book Fair in Berlin.

Joint commitment

The Divan and the OIB are equally responsible for organising and financing the book prize. Both institutions contribute their expertise, networks and perspectives to the selection process and public presentation.

The first call for entries is planned for 2026. In classical Arabic, the word al-riwaq refers to the arcade or colonnade of a mosque, madrasa or palace – architecturally protected but open to encounters, teaching and discussion.

The Riwaq Book Prize creates an important forum for highlighting academic excellence in Arabic studies and Middle Eastern research.
