The basis of this book is a text from 1930s written in a mixture of the Uzbek and Turkish language, the first and so far only evidence of this phenomenon. The manuscript deals with a number of Central Asian Turkic poets of the early 20th century. In this book not only the content is analyzed, but the focus lies on the examination of the language it is written in. In addition to the manuscript and the textual analysis, the book comprises notes on the historical events of the period of time covered in the manuscript and comments on several of the poets and their backgrounds.
A. Sumru Özsoy is professor of linguistics in the Department of Western Languages and Literatures at Bogazici University in Istanbul. She studied Comparative Literature and Linguistics and obtained her Ph.D. in Linguistics in 1983. Her main fields of interest include syntax, the structure of Turkish and Caucasian Languages, cognitive linguistics and sign language.
Claus Schönig was a professor for Turkish Studies at the Institute for Turkish Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin. He studied Islamic and Turkish Studies and Islamic philology in Mainz where he also obtained his Ph.D. in Turkish Studies in 1983.
Esra Karabacak is assistant professor in the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at Bogazici University in Istanbul.
Ingeborg Baldauf is professor for Central Asian Languages and Cultures in the School of Central Asian Studies at Humboldt University, Berlin. She studied Turkish and Islamic Studies and wrote her Ph.D. on the Uzbeki folk song of Northern Afghanistan. Her areas of research include proverbs of Northern Afghanistan, pilgrimage, folk riddles and Uzbeki literature of the 20th century.
